WE R HERE CALLS OUT SHOPPING CENTER FALSEHOODS

Washington, DC – WE R HERE Executive Director and tax fairness advocate Phil Bond today released the following statement in response to more than a dozen identical opinion columns appearing around the country sounded by representatives of the shopping mall industry:

“In culture and commerce, shopping malls are the epitome of the 20th Century. So when shopping mall advocates in different states write identical letters to their local newspapers piously worrying about 21st Century commerce, consumers and Members of Congress should be suspicious.

The truth of the matter is that in supporting the Marketplace Fairness Act, the International Council of Shopping Centers and its members are pushing legislation that would heap a far greater regulatory burden on online retailers than is faced by brick and mortar shops – the exact opposite of the ‘real and fair competition’ they claim to seek. Their thinly veiled purpose is to eliminate small online retailers across the country. In fact, if MFA became law, small e-retailers would be confronted with cost of complying with almost 10,000 tax jurisdictions – and the risk of audits from dozens of states.

If shopping malls are concerned about the competition, they should perhaps be attacking Walmart and Amazon – their allies in the push to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act – not the small online retailers that actually embody the 21st Century economy.”
