WE R HERE RESPONDS TO REINTRODUCTION OF MARKETPLACE FAIRNESS ACT

Washington, DC - WE R HERE Executive Director and tax fairness advocate Phil Bond today released the following statement in response to media reports that the Marketplace Fairness Act will be reintroduced in the Senate this afternoon:

“There they go again. We might have hoped that a new Congress, the ongoing and principled opposition of the House of Representatives, and the fact that some of the Marketplace ‘Fairness’ Act’s most outspoken Senate champions were handed their walking papers by the voters last year, would all convince these Senators not to reintroduce this legislative boondoggle.

“Unfortunately, Senators Enzi, Durbin, Alexander, and Heitkamp appear to still be fixated on using  the powers of Congress to crush small online retailers across the country. They still want to do the bidding of Walmart and Amazon. They still want to empower state tax collectors to roam far beyond their boundaries. This is a sad case of legislative overreach that will cause small e-retailers to redouble their efforts to educate both policymakers and consumers about the misguided policy these Senators are proposing. There is nothing fair about the MFA. It remains nothing more than an attempt to let tax collectors loose on the Internet, tilting the playing field in favor of retail behemoths and discriminating against some of the smallest, and most dynamic, retailers out there.”
