Protect Small Online Businesses: Stay in the Universal Postal Union

The United States is considering withdrawing from the Universal Postal Union due to shipping cost inequities between the United States and developing countries.

For more than 145 years, the Universal Postal Union has set the rules for international mail delivery. Because of the UPU, you can easily send a birthday gift to a friend on the other side of the world, or get a letter from your daughter studying abroad. By facilitating mail delivery between countries, the UPU also allows small online businesses to compete with large retailers and sell around the world with minimal complications.

If the US withdraws from the UPU, small companies like yours might not be able to send mail internationally — starting October 17, 2019!

Write your Members of Congress and say NO to withdrawing from the UPU.

Dear [Member of Congress],

As a small business online retailer, I rely on the online marketplace for both the growth of my business and the financial wellbeing of my family. I also rely on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver orders to my customers, here in the U.S. and across the world, in a timely manner. As you may know, the United States is considering withdrawing from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) due to shipping cost inequities between the United States and developing countries. While I support reform of the current rate setting system, withdrawing from the UPU would have a host of unintended consequences that would hurt US small business exporters like me.

For more than 145 years, the Universal Postal Union has set the rules for international mail delivery. Because of the UPU, I can easily send a birthday gift to a friend on the other side of the world, or you can get a letter from your daughter studying abroad. By facilitating mail delivery between countries, the UPU also allows small online businesses like mine to compete with large retailers and sell around the world.

If the US withdraws from the UPU, the US Postal Service will lose access to postal customs clearance around the world. This has never happened before, and is unchartered territory – the consequences could be enormous and could irreparably harm small online businesses across the country if we are cut off from the international marketplace.

To put it simply, withdrawal from the UPU will destroy the ability of small online businesses in America to compete internationally, cutting thousands of businesses off from the global market.

I respectfully urge you to push the administration to REMAIN a member of the UPU, and keep American small online businesses competitive in the global marketplace.

Thank you for your support of small online businesses across America.

Sincerely,
