To fight Cuomo's internet sales tax, eBay enlists army of customers

The Cuomo administration is getting serious about collecting taxes from online sales. The governor’s budget proposal would require the likes of eBay and Amazon to collect sales taxes from merchants on their sites who sell goods to New York residents. Currently, those online retailers collect sales tax only if the merchant has a presence in New York.

But eBay is getting serious too: The San Jose, Calif.-based online marketplace is calling the proposal “a drastic departure from current law,” in a letter it has just emailed to its users in New York.
