LETTER: Online Tax Letter Misrepresents Issue
I was disappointed to read Pam Eaton’s recent letter April 10 (Congress must pass e-fairness legislation), particularly her perpetuation of the urban legend of “showrooming.”
Eaton claims that “businesses all across the state say they’ve watched customers come into their stores only to make their final purchases online to avoid paying sales tax,” but national research contradicts that version of reality.
Rather, as found in an independent study by PriceWaterhouse
Coopers last year, fully 10 times as many consumers were researching products online so they could go buy them at the local brick-and-mortar shop. I haven’t heard small brick and mortar retailers, whether based in Idaho or elsewhere around the country, complaining about that!
